  • › FAA Young Artist of the Year

The Folk Alliance Australia National Youth Awards were held at the 2018 National Folk Festival in Canberra over the Easter period. The FAA received applications from across Australia from a range of Folk organisations & Clubs. The FAA were able to support and program 6 acts from our applications this year.

Our 2018 Youth Awards line up had some high quality youth artists and represented a good cross section of the Folk scene presenting a range of musical genres. On Sunday 1 April 2018, six young acts aged between 14 – 25 years performed to a packed house at the Majestic Stage at the National Folk Festival. These artists were Bec Bastoli, STAV (Stav Shaul), Red Grenadier, Girl on the Hill, Lucy Kammermann and Jo Davie. Congratulations to all these top class acts – Monique Clare (our 2017 young artist of the year) concluded the concert whilst our panel of judges had a difficult task of selecting a Young Artist of the Year and runner up. FAA will work with and offer support to all showcase acts across the year. We were thrilled to announce that our 2018 Young Artist of the year is STAV Shaul fromMelbourne who was nominated by Multicultural Arts Victoria. Support will also be offered to Jo Davie from Queensland.

FAA thanks all the artists who generously shared their experience, knowledge and skills as we discussed touring, management and general hints for getting ahead in the industry at our Folk  Music Industry Panel Workshop at the National Folk Festival the panel consisted of Jenny Thomas, members of The Young Folk (Ire), members of Breabach (Scotland) Erin Collins ( Cygnet Folk Festival ) and host Una McAlinden.

Our partnership with the National Folk Festival (NFF) enables FAA to host a range of events at the festival and to connect to the heart of the Folk community – we are very grateful for the ongoing support and partnership with NFF.

Over the coming year FAA will again work with a range of festivals to showcase and the artists from our Young Artists Development Program – we look forward to presenting youth feature performances and concerts and industry panels across the country. You can read more at
