Jammalong in Melbourne is open for new members
Beginning in 2014 and part of a jamming network that is now growing around Australia, Jammalong in Melbourne is a group of music lovers who enjoy jamming together for fun and friendship. We meet at 12 noon, on the second Saturday of each month at Jells Park, Wheelers Hill. There are no membership fees. All instruments used are acoustic in nature, without amplification. Members take turns in leading songs but can pass. All levels are welcome - beginners to professional musicians. Traditional styles are favoured with a bias towards bluegrass, country, celtic and folk music. Whilst respecting traditions, the emphasis is on friendly participation and enjoyment. We believe that if participants enjoy themselves, then the music flows more freely and can speak for itself. Typically members enjoy the friendly social atmosphere, development of skills, networking, the promotion of traditional music, whilst simultaneously broadening the horizons and confidence of all who participate.
Jammalong in Melbourne follows the model started in 2010 by Jammalong in Canberra. There is now also a jammalong group in Queensland and we look forward to more growing in other areas. If you are interested, please do not be daunted. We can even help you start your own group. Music skills and expertise does not grow on trees but like trees, they can be grown from extremely humble beginnings. They key is in identifying the right conditions, where seeds can grow and then ensure an environment of care and nurture. With the right elements in place and with a little bit of time, the results can be absolutely amazing!
We meet near Madeline's Cafe and typically play music under the shade of a large tree. There are toiilets nearby and the cafe is very convenient for coffee, meals and snacks. Most co-ordination and communication prior to events, happens in our Facebook group. Since 2021, we now have an annual camp, typically held in May. If it rains, we usually play in the nearby picnic shelter or sometimes closer to the cafe. Bring along a chair and a song to share!
