I’m the current CMVic Coordinator and I was really excited at our recent meeting of CMVic contractors (staff) when we came up with a set of guidelines for this next big event in May. They’re all listed below - let us know what you think…
Overall purpose
• proliferate community music making across Victoria
Target attendees
• all community music makers across Victoria, including singers and instrumentalists of all shapes and sizes, abilities, and genres, including both leaders and other participants
• families: child friendly venue with at least one music session suitable for kids
Style
• a fun celebration of inclusive music making
• accessible: we will use language that everyone understands (e.g. ‘Song Swaps’ is only understood in detail by singers who’ve been involved for a number of years)
Program of sessions and workshops
• there should be a variety, each designed to be suitable for a specified target group or for a specific purpose (e.g. leaders, experienced singers/musicians, beginners, all comers, etc)
• some sessions and workshops will be organized around themes rather than vocal vs instrumental (e.g. rhythm, melody, harmony, theory)
• include sessions aimed leadership skills sharing
• include at least one sharing showcase session (i.e. where impromptu groups demonstrate what they’ve been working on)
• Include a street band style activity
• include a big ensemble play and sing for everyone to join in with
• include at least one kids session
• make sure there are suitable Saturday night ‘shenanigans’ (fun goings on inclusive of everyone)
• ensure there is an activity that unites everyone on Friday night, including our values and skills sharing approach – led jointly by a Vic Sings person and a VMM person
